Recently 4th graders had a homework assignment to create a musical instrument from recycled materials. We watched the Landfill Harmonic from Paraguay with awe. Ms. Hunter and I were delighted with the creativity and ingenuity displayed in the array of instruments that were brought in. Here are a few from our class:
After the two classes shared their creations with each other, Ms. Stone worked with them to organize their sounds (scrapers, shakers, strings, drummers & blowers) and play a song together. They decided to stop midway and sing about making their instruments out of trash to the tune of Old McDonald, but they were so into the music they were making they starting singing the Old McDonald lyrics (including Ms. Stone!). It was great fun. I think the kids were kind of astounded at the sound they were able to make collectively.
